Background

In 1995, the late Billy Ko M.B.E. organised the first National Chinese Mental Health Conference in Birmingham. Every year since 1995 he helped to organise National Conferences with professionals who have an interest in mental health issues in Chinese and related communities.

Conferences have been held in London (1996), Manchester (1997), Leeds (1998), Hackney (London) (1999/2000), Birmingham (2000), Sheffield (2001), Liverpool (2002). There are offers to host National Conferences in Glasgow in 2004 and Northern Ireland in 2005. The conferences have helped raise awareness of mental health issues in Chinese and related communities and have helped professionals working with clients with mental health problems offer a better service.

Following the last conference in Liverpool in 2002, we decided the time was right to form a UK Association for Chinese Mental Health. Several meetings have since been held in Birmingham and Manchester and we are now ready to invite you to join us. We hope membership to the Association will come from all parts of the UK. Top executive posts in this Association will be held for a period not exceeding three years. We hope this will encourage more people to participate and share their skill and vision with us.
